BHMBA and BHRC team up for 2010

September 12 is the date for both running and riding at Victoria Lake. The run takes place at 9AM and the ride/race follows at 11:30AM. The course is 8.4 miles with options for either 1 or 2 laps. For directions and info on the trail check out the BHRC Trail Series website.

Last weekend, Terry Peak once again hosted a group of mountain bikers for some rare lift-assisted riding. The final weekend for riding Terry will be September 11 & 12, race weekend. Check out Terry Peak’s website for more info.

Local riders help school get funding for kids walking and riding to school

Phil and Nancy Busching are among the folks who’ve worked to promote cycling among children in the Black Hills. As a result of this work, Meadowbrook Elementary will receive a $168,000 grant under the Safe Routes to School program. Congratulations on the grant and thanks for working to promote cycling in the area.

Bike Free riders reach the Black Hills

Paul Lebelle and Adam Burkowske of Bike Free , are
riding their bikes cross-country to get bikes for military kids. They have the
support of the Rotary and the USO is helping with bike distribution.

They have biked over 2,000 miles so far and are now in Rapid City, South
Dakota.

ABOUT BIKE FREE

Pedaling more than 5,000 miles from Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay to the
California coast, bicyclists Paul Lebelle and Adam Burkowske have joined
the movement to share the goodness of cycling with kids – specifically,
the kids of our military families.

Paul and Adam started Bike Free (www.bikefree.org), a non-profit charity,
whose goal is to get 1,000 bikes and helmets to military kids.

“The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a heavy toll on kids growing
up in military families. Parents come back wounded or don’t come back at
all. Kids are also facing parents’ multiple deployments,” says Adam.

“We know that being outside in the fresh air, sunshine, and having
physical activity is not only good for your health, but also raises your
spirit,” says Paul.

Both Paul and Adam’s families have military backgrounds. Adam’s brother
served on the USS George Washington and is now stationed in San Diego.
One of Paul’s grandfathers graduated from the Naval Academy and captained
submarines. Paul’s other grandfather was former NY Giants Kyle Rote whose
older brother, Jack, sacrificed his life at Iwo Jima and received the
Purple Heart.

“Military kids are the forgotten victims of war. Bringing the joy,
freedom, and fun of riding a bicycle to these kids is what Bike Free is
all about.”

Terry Peak Ride Weekend

Terry Peak will be running the chairs to carry bikes and riders to the top for some excellent riding this summer. The weekend of August 21 & 22 will be open for riding. The weekend of September 11 will see more riding and DH races. In addition, there will be live music, the Dark Horse Saloon will be open for refreshments, and some folks will be camping up there too.

Update: The XC course has been eliminated, but the excellent DH riding is very much on.

Buzzard’s Roost Race Change

The August 21 race at Buzzard’s Roost has been canceled. In its place will be a memorial race/ride/gathering for Sierra and Jeramy Rogers. This event will take place on October 10; more information will be posted soon.

BHMBA Family Night

What: BHMBA FAMILY NIGHT
Where: Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park (M-Hill) east trailhead
When: Thursday, July 15th from 5:00-8:00 PM

Bring your family out for an evening of riding, wiener roasting,
meeting new friends and seeing old ones. Come out anytime between 5
and 8. Take a ride with your family and then stop at the BHMBA
trailer to eat, drink, and socialize.

Women’s Group Rides

The Drty Grlz are again doing women’s group rides this summer on Monday nights.

July 12th Bulldog-meet at Meadowwood Lanes (west end) at 5:25 if you want to carpool.
July 19th Lollipop Loop at Victoria Lake. Ride starts at the V just off of Sheridan Lake Road on Victoria Lake Road.
July 26th Pactola-meet at Canyon Lake Park parking lot across from Church at 5:30 if you want to carpool.
Aug. 2nd M-Hill-meet in east side parking lot.
Aug. 9th Pactola-meet at Canyon Lake Park parking lot across from Church at 5:30 if you want to carpool.
Aug. 16th Loop 15 at Victoria Lake
Aug. 23rd Buzzard’s Roost
Aug. 30th Bulldog-meet at Meadowwood Lanes (west end) at 5:25 if you want to carpool.
